Someone just starting to take online surveys can reach a lot of frustration instead of finding anything valuable. This may be for several reasons. Some survey companies send out like 10 or more emails for surveys per day. It can leave quite a build-up of emails, and if you're a member of several of these companies, you'll quickly notice that your email inboxes are always full.
Some surveys pay very little, or the time it takes to complete them is vague or drastically understated. I don't think it's fair for someone to spend half an hour of their time, and receive less than $1 compensation. I wouldn't call it robbery, because the survey taker went through with it, knowing the results beforehand. I definitely think it's bordering theft. Your time is worth much more than a few dollars an hour - but it's becoming increasingly difficult to reach such results, because so many people are willing to take their surveys for pennies.
I prefer product trials over surveys, to be honest, but it's not always easy to find them. Usually they are hidden amongst other surveys that are sent out by survey routers ( survey sites like [toluna] or [Opinion Outpost] ) but those are the same companies that send you ridiculous amounts of emails. Don't get me wrong, they're all usually decent and upfront about how much each survey is worth and how long they should take.
Anyway, on to what I'd recommend to start with. You want to use an email company that allows you to use filters to sort incoming email. otherwise your inbox will become full, fast. Organize it, and the clutter won't bother you. I prefer gmail, but other email companies have filters too, I'm sure. You should probably get a paypal account. They are free, they're owned by ebay, and it allows you to pay for items at many online sites (never pay to take a survey, that's just ridiculous), or receive payments from sites or people, without a debit card. They also offer a debit card to use the funds in your account away from the computer. Also, this might be quite important, if you join ANY of these sites, and connect it to facebook, I would recommend going into account settings > app settings and if a site can post to your facebook, change the privacy setting to post to 'only yourself' - that way you won't clutter up your friends walls, and can decide what you want to be private and public. I personally feel that is the most important step!
- [BzzAgent] is a pretty cool site. You go into the survey section every month, and make sure all your 'surveys' are done. They pretty much just ask demographics (your age, how many kids, do you have pets, etc..) and then when they want to send you something, they'll email you, asking you to accept it. They'll also pay you with some points for [MyPoints] which is another site that you should sign up for before hand, to maximize what they'll pay you.
After you test out a product, you'd do a review or post to facebook, or one of the other activities they ask you to do, such as tweeting something. You are not required to, but if you don't interact with the site about the product, your score with them will go down, and you'll be less likely to get considered for future trials. I get between 6 and 10 products to try per year, but results vary. - [Smiley360] is pretty similar to bzzAgent, but they also attempt to put together a social network, which I haven't been able to get into. However, they'll email you when you can do a product trial, and you just need to reply to answer it. It is actually much less work than Bzzagent, but I still prefer the other.
- [Crowdtap] - there are a LOT of things to do with crowdtap. I actually dedicate about an hour and a half every week to this site, and typically receive $20-$40 in amazon giftcards. They are awarded through monthly drawings, but unlike sweepstakes, you actually do win. I win between 3 and 5 giftcards every month, usually. In January, I actually won $80. In addition to that, they have frequent item samplers. I've gotten a ton of mccormicks spices, cereals, new toddler snacks, and several other things. It's a pretty cool site, and if you choose to take advantage of everything they have to offer, facebook me a message at facebook.com/tyr888 if you need help with anything, including the method I use to guarantee my shared links get clicked)
- [Paid Viewpoint] is definitely an interesting survey site. Typically, you'd get a survey every day or so. It only pays $0.10, but is very quick and easy. Every now and then you'll get an email with a link to a survey that could pay as much as $5 (though I find they typically pay about $1.25, but I'm sure there are higher paying ones) - payment is quick, usually next day, and directly to your paypal account only.
- [QuickRewards Network] is mostly a survey router site. They will send you a TON of router surveys from amplicious, surveyhead, etc.. I honestly have filters set up to automatically delete router surveys. They also send a few surveys per day that are like fifty cents for 7 minutes, that are not router (random) surveys, and those are the ones that I consider doing. They have a lot of other stuff on their site, if you're interested, but the most important thing is to do your 'profiler survey' so that they can mail you surveys that are aimed specifically at people in your demographic ranges. They also pay within 72 hours, and are quite impressive about it. Pay is through paypal or amazon giftcards
- [Pinecone Research] is a pretty popular site, and quite well respected. Their payment system has changed from it's former glory, but it's still decent. Once or twice a month, you'll get a survey asking you questions like do you bake, do you listen to music, etc.. you do not get paid for them. And once, twice, thrice or more, you'll get surveys that you can tell are specifically asking about certain products or ideas. Each of these (The most I've gotten were 6 in one month, the least I've gotten is 2 in a month) pays you 300 points, which can be immediately redeemed for $3. Additionally, every survey that is specifically about a certain product has a chance of sending you the product trial, which means that you'll also get another paid survey after you receive it. I've gotten some pretty nifty things from them, frozen waffles, energy drinks, deodorant, razors, etc..
There are many other ways that I use to make a few bucks online, but I feel that the above are great to start out with, preferably one at a time.
